You Be the Judge / Question
By Tom Green, Chairman NAA Officials and Rules Committee

Sanctioned judges are regularly required to respond to case studies that test their ability to interpret and apply FITA and NAA rules to tournament situations. Here’s your chance to test and improve your knowledge of the rules.

The following are questions that appeared in past judge case studies.

See http://www.archery.org/rule_book/rule_book.html for the FITA rule book and
http://www.archery.org/fita_publications/fita_publications.html for the Judges Handbook and other useful FITA publications.

An archer has an equipment failure on the last arrow of the end at 90 meters and misses two ends
(12 arrows). When and how much time will the archer have to make up those arrows?

The archer will make up the arrows at the conclusion of the 90-meter round and before 70-meter
round begins.

The archer will have 40 seconds per arrow to shoot the make-up arrows under the supervision of a Judge. In this case, the archer will shoot two ends of six (6) arrows each and score after each end.

However, make up will not delay the tournament more than 15 minutes.

Reference:

FITA Constitution and Rules 7.4.2.4 In the event of an equipment failure…Extra time may be given to make the necessary repairs or changes to the damaged equipment.

The athlete will make up the appropriate number of arrows at the earliest opportunity under the
supervision of a Judge.

FITA Constitution and Rules 7.5.4.1 Forty seconds is the time allowed for an athelete to shoot one arrow when shooting alternately in the Olympic Round matches, in order to break ties, or to shoot make-up arrows.

FITA Judge Guide Book, v4, pg 36 The 1999 Congress agreed to allow a maximum of only 15 minutes for any equipment failure .… and it will be practical to make up arrows after the last end of the distance.

Common sense must apply and there will be no timing of the 15 minutes, but the archer will be given a certain number of ends to be shot with a normal scoring procedure after each end, applicable to approximately 15 minutes.
